National Seminar in
Chemistry
The postgraduate department
of chemistry, in association
with and financed by Indian
Academy of Sciences
(Bangalore), Indian Academy
Sciences (Allahbad) and
Indian National Academy of
Sciences (New Delhi),
organizes a national seminar
on aspects of theoretical
chemistry and spectroscopy.
The tentative date of the
program is 25 and 26 of the
month. Eminent scholars like
Professors. K.L. Sebastian,
E. Arunan, K. Mangala Sunder
and Ayan Datta will present

Computer orientation
for local librarians
March 7: A short term
computer awareness and
initiation course for local
librarians of Ottappalam
Taluk began in the College
today. Sponsored and
financed by the State
Library Council, the program
is implemented by the
Ottappalam Taluk Library
Council and the Multimedia
Center of the College.
Designed to last for
forty-five hours and cover
basics such as Word and the
software prepared for local
libraries, the program will
be conducted on Saturdays
and other holidays.

respectively. The main talk
on “Infrared Spectroscopy
and Chemical Applications”
was delivered by Dr. P.
Ananthapadmanabhan, KKTM
College, Kodungalloor. Sri.
K.H. Subramanian gave away
the K.S. Hariharan Memorial
Endowment to Miss C.P.
Priyakumari, an outstanding
alumnus who pursues doctoral
research at Indian Institute
of Science, Education and

commemorative speech,
conducted by the department
of Malayalam as part of the
Punnasseri lecture series,
was held in the college
Seminar Hall today. Sri. U.P.

address. It was followed by
a general discussion that
attempted to evaluate the
social life of Marar. K.P.

Ph.D. open defense
February 24: The open
defense of the Ph.D
dissertation submitted by P.
Basheer under the
supervision of Dr. N.M.
Nampoothiri took place
today. The topic was the way
in which chidren’s tales
have evolved in Kerala since
the ninetieth century and
its dialectical relation
with the shifting social
milieu. In the function
presided over the research
supervisor, Sri U.P.
Jayaprakash, head of the
department of Malayalam
welcomed the audience.
U.G.C. NET Regular
Coaching
The Placement Cell and the
Multimedia Center offer long
term regular coaching for
UGC NET in various subjects.
The training is open to
everyone and is free of

Long term training for
NET in economics
The postgraduate department
of economics and the Center
for Economics and
Development Studies (Kerala
chapter) have joined hands
to impart intensive long
term training for NET exam
in economics. Designed for
250 hours to last until
November, the program got
underway on 21 Feb. The
training is open to everyone
and is free of cost
College Day
February 16 & 17: The annual
celebrations of the college
were held on 16 and 17
February. On the first day
there was an academic talk
delivered by Sri N.P.
Chandrasekhar, Executive
Editor, Kairali Television,
on media and contemporary
society. Afternoon session
was marked out by a vocal
concert performed by the
students of the college. On
the second day the Principal
presented the annual report.
The session was inaugurated
by C.H. Ashique, Chairman of
the Standing Committee of
Calicut University. The
noted cine artiste Santhosh
and promising singer Ranjin
Raj were the invited guests
on the occasion. Ms. A.R.
Ammu, member of the
university senate and a

The annual Punnaseri
memorial talk, jointly
organized by the PTA and the
department of Sanskrit was
held at 1.30 in the
auditorium. Dr. P.P.

Letters, MG University,
Kottayam, delivered the talk
on Nineteenth Century Kerala
and Renaissance.
In the morning session, Dr.
J. Prasad, Vice-Chencellor
of Sree Sankaracharya
University, inaugurated the
digitization of the extant
volumes of Vijnanacintami
and launched the last
issue of the electronic
journal of the same name.
The project is conceived and
executed by the Multimedia
Center of the college with
the academic assistance of
the Sanskrit department and
the financial support of the
district panchayat. Dr. C.M.
Neelakantan, head of the
department of Vedanta, Sree
Sankaracharya University,
performed the gurusmarana.

College Welfare Committee
January 12: A Development
Committee( College
Vikasana samithi) which
has the MP, MLA and other
people’s representatives as
members, was formed to
address and realize the
needs and aspirations of the
college with a long term
vision. The impending NAAC
visit and the centenary
celebrations prominently
figured in the meeting and
resultant discussions. Dr.

chemistry, was elected the
convener of the committee.

Film Making Workshop
The department of Sanskrit
in association with the
college union organized a
daylong session on film
making on October 23. In the
morning session there were
talks on the basic nature
and possibilities of cinema
while the forenoon session
was meant for practical
lessons.
Seminar
A seminar on business system
and information management
was arranged by the
department of commerce and
management studies for the
first semester B.Com. and
BBA students on october 21.
The seminar discussed
business intelligence
technologies adapted by
contemporary business
houses. Sri N.K. Babu of the
department welcomed the
gathering. Mrs. Swapna,
delivered the key address.
An open discussion followed
the talk. Ms Sreekala G.

Art Fete
The annual art fete of the
college was held on four
days. The first two—8and
9—were for offstage events
like drawing and writing.
Stage events were

Onam Celebration
For the second time in a
row, the College Union
arranged a sumptuous Onam
Sadya for the students,
teacher and office staff of
the college on August 20.
The event was carried out by
a committee headed by Dr. P.
Narayanan, head of the
Department,
Chemistry.
The Staff Club of the
college had its onam
celebrations on
25 August. The mood of
festivity and
jubilation
was enhanced by the variety
entertainments such as
solos, choruses and talks
offered by the teachers.

The department of commerce
conducted an orientation
program on various
certificate courses on
capital market on August 18.

Workshop on Restructured
Malayalam Degree Courses
The department of Malayalam
conducted a one day workshop
on the restructuring of
undergraduate education with
the financial assistance of
the Kerala State Higher
Education Council on August
12. Thirty teachers from
various colleges attended.
Sri Kavumbai Balakrishnan,
Chairman, Board of Studies,
headed the discussions. The
program produced a clear
blueprint for the changes
ahead.
Road Safety Class
On
August
8, the Pattambi Circle
Inspector of Police V.I.
Krishnadas was invited to
the college to deliver a
speech on baseline road
safety measures. Given the
escalating number of road
accidents and resultant
casualties, the programme
was
all
the more relevant and
succeeded in sensitizing the
student community to the
basics of road etiquette.
The programme was arranged
by the NCC and the
Multimedia
Centre.

New Principal
Dr.K.C. Vilasini, former

The Interdisciplinary Forum,

Center , organized
a large scale seminar
entitled ‘Deflationary
Paradox in India ’ in
the college auditorium on 23
July with the assistance and
active participation of the
postgraduate departments of
English.

Ph. D Open Defence
The
second consecutive doctoral
defence in Malayalam in the
ongoing academic year took
in the college Seminar Hall
on 23 July. The dissertation
‘Poems of Kunjunni as a
Pedagogical Medium’,
submitted by Ms Suja under
the research supervision of
Dr. Muraleedhar stood apart
by virtue of its elegant
presentation and relevant
subject. Students and
teachers from department of
Malayalam and others were
present on the occasion,
rising questions and making
the whole session lively and
vibrant.
N.C.C. enrolment
The Formal
enrolment to the NCC
for 2009—10 was held
in the college auditorium on
15 July. Twenty-six students
from and an equal number
from six local schools also
joined.
Ph. D Open Defence
The open defence of the
doctoral thesis submitted by
Ms P. Sheeja on the elements
of the absurd in the oeuvre
of the trailblazing
Malayalam writer Sri O.V.
Vijayan under the
supervision of Dr. P. Geetha,
member of the department.
The dissertation that
dwelled at length on the
aesthetic, political and
sociological dimensions of
the manifestations of the
absurd in his works,
predictably, triggered a
series of animated
discussions. Dr. D. Benjamin
was the Chairman. Dr. P.
Geetha proposed the vote of

N.C.C Orientation Programme
Under the joint auspices of
the NCC Unit and Multimedia Centre, a demonstration class was
organized on 9 July to
familiarize and lure more
youngsters to the NCC.

The department of Malayalam
joined hands with the
Folklore Fellows of Malabar
(trust) to commemorate
the noted scholar,
teacher and musician Sri
T.P.Sukumaran on 7 July.
Sri C.P.
Chithrabhanu welcomed the
audience. Sri U.P.
Jayaprakash, Head of the
Department, presided over
the function. The pioneering
folklorist Dr. Raghavan
Payyanad delivered the
keynote address, dense with
information and marked out
by perceptive insight, with
sharp focus on the intricate
and problematic relationship
between the social
discourses of the
postcolonial era and
folklore. In the following
seminar on the ways in which
folklore survives,
H.K.Santhosh of the
department played the
moderator. Dr. E.K.
Govindavarma Raja (Folklore
Studies, Calicut Uty) Dr.K.M.
Bharathan (Mahathma Gandhi College,
Mahe) presented papers which
sparked off questions and
arguments from the audience.
The afternoon session was an
appreciation session on
music led by the celebrated
singer Sri V.T.Murali.
Various folk tunes and ragas
used in popular music were
introduced and sung out. Sri

Workshop on Blog
The postgraduate department
of Malayalam and the Multimedia Centerconducted a one day workshop on
the basics and possibilities
of the medium of blog on
June 26. Sri. K. Rajendran
welcomed the audience. Sri.
H.K. Santhosh introduced the
new medium by highlighting
the ways in which it
has emerged and the ways in
which its radically
questions the traditional
concepts of writing, ,
reading and understanding.
Sri. Vishnu Prasad Wayanad
talked on how together to
create and successfully
maintain blogs and their
infinite possibilities.
Ten million financial aid to
the college
The UGC, in its ongoing XI
Plan, has allotted 101 lakhs
for the comprehensive
development of the college.
As per the scheme
granted by the Commission in
a face-to-face
interaction with the college
authorities at the University of Calicut on 25 from June, 16 lakhs goes undergraduate development, 23 as
postgraduate assistance and
the rest under various
merged schemes.
The college is
gearing up to utilize the
amount within the stipulated
period.
