News: June 2008

NABARD FUND FOR NEW BLOCK

Rs. 200,00,000 has been allotted to the college as part of the NABARD RIDF plan to construct a three-storied building accommodating thirty classrooms. Another thirteen lacs have been allotted for a ladies’ toilet block. The PWD has sanctioned Rs. 300, 000 towards the renovation of the kitchen of the women’s hostel of the college.

OPEN FORUM HELD

Under the joint auspices the of Multimedia Center and the Interdisciplinary Forum, a debate was conducted on the recommendations of the Higher Education Council regarding the plan to introduce credit-and-semester system at the undergraduate level on 19, June 2008. Sri. R. Muraleedharan, HoD of statistics, was the moderator. Sri. P.P.Prakasan and Sri. P. Rajesh presented key papers. May teachers and students actively participated in the following discussion on the new pedagogical paradigm shift that necessitates grading and its statistical aspects.

SHORT FILM SCREENED

Multimedia Center, in association with the College Union, screened Planning, a short film written and conceived by Sri. M. Sudevan, to a packed audience on 13, June 2008.

OUR TREE CAMPAGIN

World Environment Day was observed in the college on 5 June.300-odd saplings were planted in the college campus as part of Nammude Maram(Our Tree) Campaign, the social forestry programme launched by the Forest and Education Departments .

DEGREE ADMISSION NOTIFIED

Admission to all First Year Degree Courses for the year 2008 has been notified. Application forms can be had from the office from 2 June onwards between 10am and 1.00pm. A Registration fee of Rs.30/ (Rupees Thirty only-non refundable) should be remitted in the college office. Duly filled in application forms should be submitted on or before 30 June 2008.

 

DIRECTOR OF COLLEGIATE EDUCATION VISIT

Sri.Sasidhara I.A.S, director of collegiate education visited SNGS College on 3May 2008. The specific object of the visit was to assess the existing infrastructural facilities of the college and to explore possibilities of further development using financial aid offered by NABARD. Discussions were held among the Director, college authorities and NABARD representatives to evolve a feasible scheme. The final proposal to the tune of more than 3 crores for a three storey building and a Ladies comfort station has been submitted to the authorities concerned.

C.P.Chitra, Head of the department of Malayalam has been appointed as Director, Higher Secondary Education. She has worked for over 27 years as the faculty member of the department. Her distinguished academic career also included positions as the Syndicate member, University of calicut and member, state curriculum steering committee. We wish all the success in her new post.

RETIREMENTS

Our principal Smt.K.Indiradevi and Sri.M.P.Vasudevan, H.O.D Malayalam have retired from service. P.T.A  organised a meeting to bid them on 25 March 2008.The meeting was inaugurated by Dr.P.V.Ramankutty,  former Principal of Govt. College, Elerithattu. Sri.M.Narayanan ,Vice-President, P.T.A presided over the function. On the occasion various prizes in the field of academic, cultural, NCC, etc., were awarded to students.

Department of Malayalam also conducted a fare well meeting on 24,March 2008. Dr.Chathanathu Achuthanunni, Director, Dravidian Universityregional centre, Edappal inaugurated the function. PUNNASSERI TALK SERIES

The postgraduate departments of chemistry and botany organized Punnasseri Memorial Talks. The Punnasseri Talk by the Dept. of Chemistry was conducted on 14, March 2008.Dr.Ani Deepthi , Amritha Viswavidya peeth university Kollam  delivered a speech on carbine chemistry .Dr.Sylus Benjamin, University of Calicut  delivered an talk on  the basics of biotechnology on 27, March 2008.

U.G.C.MAJOR PROJECT TO Dr.MADHU

Dr.B.Madhu, retired faculty of Dept. of Sanskrit has been granted a major project of the U.G.C. Pushpadas Kuniyil of the same department is the co-investigator. This is the first project the college gets since 2000, when Dr.N.M.Namboodiri Dept. of Malayalam was granted a major project

FIRST&THIRD RANK IN M.A.MALAYALAM

Students from the Department of Malayalam bagged first and third rank in Calicut University M.A. Malayalam examinations. Asha M.P. and Sabitha secured first and third ranks respectively.

COLLEGE UNION ANNUAL CELEBRATIONS & COLLEGE DAY

The annual celebrations of the college union took place on 11, 12 and13 March 2008. On the first day there were a film festival and a stage show named Gramotsavam   performed by Jananayana; the second day witnessed a photo exhibition and a seminar on the educational history of Kerala during the last fifty years. The final day celebrations were inaugurated by Sri John Britas, Chairman of Kairali TV. In the afternoon there was a music concert.

DISCUSSION ON UNION BUDGET

Multimedia centre, in close association with the postgraduate departments of economics and commerce organized a panel discussion on Union Budget 2008-09.The programme was formally inaugurated by Sri.Kasi Viswanathan, President, Chamber of commerce, Pattambi. Sri.P.Sarojkumar was the moderator of the session. Sri.P.Rajesh initiated the discussion by showcasing the highlights of the budget and introducing essential terminology. Sri.P.Parameswaran,  personal manager, S.B.T.Pattambi spoke next.Varoius facets of the budget were brought into focus and commented upon by Sri.M.P.Vasudevan, Smt R. Remya in the ensuing discussion, students and faculty members played an active role seeking clarifications registering disagreements and voicing concerns

MARAR ANUSMARANAM 2007-08

 

The postgraduate and research department of Malayalam organizes the annual Marar Commemorative Talk on 26 Feb. Dr.T.V. Madhu of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit and Sri. Kalpatta Narayanan, famous writer, will present papers on the occasion.

INTERDISCIPLINARY FORUM TALK

Under the auspices of the Interdisciplinary Forum form a talk on the film scripts of Sri M.T. Vasudevan Nair was conducted. Dr.P.Geetha delivered the speech that brought into close focus the traits and cultural ethos of the scripts that have fetched fame and glory many a time to the Malayalam movie industry

WORKSHOP ON FILM MAKING

A day-long session on basics of film making was held on 16 Feb. The acclaimed documentary maker Sri. K.R.Chethalloor led the session. Students scripted and shot scenes; later rushes were screened and taught how to edit them into a cohesive cinematic text

N.C.C.CADETS TOOK PART IN REPUBLIC DAY PARADE.

N.C.C. cadets of the college Sgt. Sangeeth, II B.Com, and Sgt. Mohammed Shereef, II B.A. Sanskrit, took part in the Republic Day Camp and Parade, 2008.  Sgt. Sangeeth was the only cadet from Kerala Contingent to be selected to the prestigious Prime Minister’s Guard of Honor.  It is for the first time in recent history that the 1 Coy N.C.C scales such heights of spectacular achievement.

CAMPUS SELECTION

Unicorn, an international recruiting agency, conducted campus selection at the college on 12 February and short-listed thirty-three students for various companies

NATIONAL SEMINAR IN SANSKRIT

  A three day national seminar on environmental visions in Sanskrit literature, sponsored by the Govt. of Kerala, took place on 7, 8 and 9 February.  Scholars and academicians from across the country presented papers in the program. Dr.K.C.Narayanan, editor of the Bhashaposhini inaugurated the seminar. Nearly 50 delegates participated. The papers will be published soon through the vijnanacintamani. A digitally recorded version of the seminar can be had from the multimedia center.

PUNNASSERI TALK

 

The annual Punnasseri talk was delivered by the acclaimed Malayalam writer Sri.C.Radhakrishnan on 24 of Janury . He stressed the need and importance of Gurus, and exhorted the present teacher community  to elevate themselves to the pedestal of ancient role models. Dr.P.V.Ramankutty highlighted the eventful life and stellar achievements of Sri Punnasser Nambi Sree Neelakanta Sharma in his gurusmarana.The third issue of vijnanacintamanai (e-journal),published  by the multimedia centre of the college, was launched  by the noted poet Sri.P.P.Ramachandran on the same occasion. The principal Smt.Indira Devi had inaugurated the function earlier.Dr.Jacob M Jose,P.T.A Secretary,Sri.P.Narayanan, P.T.A Vice President and Sri.P.V.Ratheesh ,Chairman of the college union participated in the function.

The annual athletics meet took place on 15 and 16 of January.V.Ahammed Kunhi,Block Panchayath President inaugurated the event. 

MODEL EXAMINATION

The model examination for undergraduate students was conducted during the first and second weeks of January. It began on 2 and came to an end on 9.

ANNUAL N.S.S. SPECIAL CAMP CONDUCTED

The annual ten day camp of the National Service Scheme (NSS) was held at Cultural Center, Pilakkattiri, Koottanadu from 23 to 31 Dec.  The event was formally inaugurated by Shri. T.P. Kunjunni, MLA. A good number of teachers, local body representatives and beneficiaries witnessed the occasion. Two roads were constructed during the camp for the benefit of the local population.   More than eighty volunteers attended the camp. There were cultural programs and awareness classes. Smt. Vasantha, Block Panchayat President presided over in the valedictory function.

CSIR/UGC NET MODEL EXAMINATION CONDUCTED

The post graduate department of chemistry conducted a coaching program for CSIR/UGC/NET and model examination in Chemical Science on 15th December 2007. The test was restricted to the present and former students of the college. A proposal to make it open to all is under serious consideration.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME ON GROUP DISCUSSION

The Multimedia Center Multimedia organized a one day orientation program on group discussion for final year degree students on 15th December 2007 . The first session was a general introduction and the second a demonstration three groups of students involved. Altogether fifty students took part in the event.

DOCUMENTARY SHOW

A documentary entitled Dracula: Past and Present was screened to a packed audience on 7 December 2007 in the seminar hall. Conceived and realized by film club Frames, a part of the Multimedia Center , it was essentially a reading of the different versions and adaptations of the 1897 novel Dracula and their sociopolitical underpinnings.

TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR COMPETATIVE EXAMINATIONS

Multimedia Center conducted a two day training program for competitive examinations like CAT and NET, with special emphasis on syllogism, reasoning, numerical ability , IT and teaching and research aptitude on 24 and 25 of November 2007.50-odd students from various colleges participated in the course. The course was free.

BLOOD GROUPING CAMP CONDUCTED

Zoology department organised a blood grouping camp in College on 14-11-2007.About 270 students were screened.

The Multimedia Center has designed the official website of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi. kerala sangeetha nataka akademi.info It was launched by Sri. M.A. Baby, minister for culture and education, on 28 October in Thiruvananthapuram in the prescence of Bharath Murali,Chairman,Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and Prof.P.Gangadharan,Secretary.

Sri. Major. O. Venugopal, vice-principal of the college, has been promoted as the Principal of Government College, Kalpatta, Wayanad. It is after serving the college for the last twenty-five years in various capacities that he bids goodbye. He was the principal-in-charge for a considerable period of time. We wish him every success in future.
APPOINTED

Dr. Abdul Sathar, lecturer in statistics, has joined the University of Kerala. He holds a Ph.D. from Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and is doing a project of the UGC. We wish him every success in future.

LEGAL AWARENESS CLASS

Legal awareness for degree students was conducted under the joint auspices of KELSA and N.S.S. on 24th and 25th of October. Advocates of Pattambi Bar Association led classes on different aspects of Indian law and related matters. 

FILM&CULTURAL FETE 

The college union conducted a day-long program entitled Monsoon Film Festival on 18th October. It was arranged in association with Sixty Years of Independence: Sixty Films in Sixty Campuses conceived by the famous cine artiste Raveendran.  The Principal inaugurated the event in the presence of Sri. Raveendran. There were a good number of cultural programs viz. Kerala natanam, padhakam, oppana, folk song, mono act and solos  presented by our students. The film Kathavaseshan was screened.  It was followed by an interaction with film star Dileep, who produced and played the title role in the movie

ANNUAL PTA MEETING
The annual P.T.A. general body held on 10th October 2007 elected the following persons new office bearers. President:K.Indira Devi(Principal). Secretery:Dr.Jacob M. Jose . Vice President:M.Narayanan. Executive Members:Dr.M.Raveendran, Dr. K. Subramaian, U.P.Jayaprakash, H.K.Santhosh, K.E.Thangal,C.Girija Mohandas, A.P.Velayudhan,Ashokan. Former Secretary Dr.K. Dr. K. Subramaian presented last year's report and accounts. The meeting demanded the institution be approved as a Heritage College.
SEMINAR ON MULTIMEDA APPLICATIONS
A one day seminar jointly organized by Multimedia Centre and Cad City Animator, Shoranur on photoshop CS3, employment opportunities of multimedia applications and along with an introductory session on the key multimedia software was conducted on 6th October 2007
MULTIMEDA CENTRE-COURSES STARTED
Multimedia orientation and Communicative English courses were formally inaugurated by Principal on 5-10-07.The programme was followed by a demonstration film on the content and structure of the courses.
QUIZ COMPETITION WON
 
Our students have secured second place in the district level power quiz conducted by KSEB Officers Association.Congratulations!

DOCUMENTARY SCREENED
Under the joint auspices of the Nature Club and the Multimedia Center, a documentary dealing with the environmental issues related to the Athirappally project was screened at 1p.m. in the seminar hall
 on 28th September 2007.
TALK CONDUCTED
 
An hour long speech was offered by Mr. Kiran Maske on 24-9-07 who has been incessantly traveling the entire crisscross of the country for the last eighteen years-on foot. He has visited practically all the major tribal settlements and areas and has gained deep knowledge of and perception into their life and troubles. The speech was quite unconventional and helped students form glimpses of the cultural fabric of these marginalized sections of the population. The programme was organised by multimedia centre.

N.C.C ANNUAL CAMP CONDUCTED
 
 
Seven hundred selected cadets, including girls, from 5 colleges and 26 schools under 28 Kerala NCC battalion and 27 battalion participated in the Annual Training Camp conducted at SNGS College during the Onam vacation from 24-8-07 to 4-9-2007 under the auspices of 28 Kerala NCC and battalion, Ottappalam. The camp was inaugurated by the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Rajat Mathur. The camp covered cadets of Palakkad and Malappuram districts. 6 NCC officers attended the 12 day long camp. It culminated with a mock battle which sought to simulate the actual war conditions as closely as possible. The camp imparted new lessons and toughened up the cadets.

N.S.S units of the College organised Onam celebration on 22-8-07.Apart from the Pookala Malsaram the programme included a variety of cultural events .Principal Smt.K.Indira devi distributed prizes to the winners.

KURO SAWA- REEL &REAL, a documentary on the legendary film director, conceived and directed by the members of the Frames Film Circle, a wing of Multimedia Centre was screened to a packed audience on 21-8-07.The event was followed by a discussion, propped by visuals, on Dreams on of the last movies of Akiro Kurusawa

STAFF CLUB ONAM CELEBRATION
 
An Onam celebration combined with a reception to the new Principal-Smt.K.Indiradevi was conducted by the Staff Club on 21-8-07.P.P.Prakasan, Secretery of the Staff Club accorded a warm welcome to the chief guest and the gathering. Mr.Jacob Punnoose, President of the club presided over the function. Dr.P.K.Prathibha Vice President of the Club proposed vote of thanks. The occasion was graced by art performances by a good number of teachers.

MULTIMEDIA CENTRE OFFERS COURSES
Certificate courses in Communicative English and multimedia applications, intended to familiarise students with cutting edge cyber technology and trends in communication, are offered by the multimedia centre of the college. The courses are of 50 and 100 hours long respectively. The programmes are meant exclusively for own students. Application forms can be had from the computer centre. Duly filled in forms are to be submitted on or before 8-9-07.

MAGAZINE RELEASE
The College Magazine for academic year 2006-07 was released by the eminent writer Sri.Alamkode Leelakrishnan on 13-7-07.The General Secretary of the college union accorded welcome in the function and Ms.Ardra Chair Person of the Union presided over. Mr.M.Narayanan Vice -President of the P.T.A and Dr.K.Subramanian, Secretary ,P.T.A offered felicitations. Mr.Rahul, Magazine Editor proposed vote of thanks.

Smt.K.Indira devi has taken charge as the new principal of Sree Neelakanta Govt. Sanskrit College,Pattambi.She taught Commerce in various colleges including sngscollege and was the principal of Madapally Govt. College last year.

The second issue of Vijnanacintamani,e-journal of sngscollege.info was released on 26-7-07 by Dr.K.G.Paulose,Vice-Chancellor,Kalamandalam Deemed University.Principal O.Venugopal presidied over the function.Dr.N.M.Namboodiri delivered a lecture on Local History and Its Methodology after the inaugural session. Focus of this Issue is Local History.

MULTIMEDIA CENTRE CONDUCTED B.Ed ENTRANCE ORIENTATION COURSE
Multimedia Centre conducted a Three Day Orientation Course for B.Ed EntranceTest on 19,21&22 July 2007.The Course included training sessions on Communicative English,Reasoning, General Knowledge,Computer Basics and Teaching Aptitude. A Model Examination was also scheduled on the last day.

ADMISSION FOR DEGREE 2007

Admission to all First Year Degree Courses for the year 2007 notified.Application for admission should be made in the prescribed form to be had from the office during working hours. A Registration fee of Rs.30/ (Rupees Thirty only-non refundable) should be remitted in the college office to get the application form.The forms will be issued from 4th June onwards from 10am to 1.00pm.

Dr.B.Madhu ,Department of Sanskrit is retiring from service on 31-03-07.College wishes him a happy and fruitful retired life.
M.P.Sankunni Nair Corner Inagurated
The books and manuscripts of the renowned critic Prof. M.P Sankunni Nair was handed to the centeral library of Sree Neelakanta Govt. Sanskrit College, Pattambi by his brother Mr. M.P Krishnan Kutti in a function held on 28-03-07 at the Seminar Hall.  It was received by the principal, Prof. T.R. Venugopal. Prof. P.V. Ramankutti inaugurated "Shankunni Nair Corner" in the library. Meeting   was precided by Mr. M. Narayanan, Vice President of the PTA.  Prof. M.P. Vasudevan delivered the memorial lecture.  Dr. M. Raveendran,Dr. K. Subramanyan and Mr. Azhagiri(Librarian) spoke on the occation.
