DEPARTMENT OF MALAYALAM  

Along with the Sanskrit, Malayalam Vidwan Course was started in 1911. But regular B.A. in Malayalam was started in 1966 and P.G. In 1968. In 1977 the department was approved as a research centre by the Calicut University. At present Dr. N.M. Namboodiri, Dr. Unnikrishnan, Dr. P. Muralidhar and Dr. P.Geetha are guiding 28 research scholars. The staff members include two Ph.D holders and five teachers doing part-time research. Every year Founder’s Day is celebrated along with the Sanskrit department. Since 1995 Marar Memorial lecture was organized . A major research project on the “Cultural Geography and Habitat of Nila River Valley” was undertaken by Dr. N.M. Namboodiri with an outlay of Rs. 6.5 Lakhs. The report was submitted to U.G.C during September 2002. This department also recieved P.G. grants from U.G.C.The department Alumni includes literary critics, Sahitya Akademy award winners, film directors, etc. because of the establishment of “CampusTheatres”during1980’s.KuttykrishnaMarar, K.N.Ezhuthachan,G.K.N., P.Kunhiramn Nair, are well known Alumnis of this department, Sanskrit dramas, Mathavilasam, Karnabharanam were staged in our Campus by the Campus Theatre. Two of the staff members have regular publications. Majority of staff members are Alumni of the College. For the encouragement of Malayalam the department has four endowments. An attempt was made to re-publish “Vijnana Chinthamani” journal.

Academic Activities

The Department conducted a three day national seminar on ‘Inter disciplinary Approach to Literature’ on 13^th , 14^th and 15^th December 2005.Smt.Saraha Joseph,DrScaria Zakkaria, P.Pavithran, M.K.Pradeepan, Ratheesh Radhakrishna,M.R.Raghava Varrier, T.K.Ramachandran, C.Rajendran and K.C.Narayanan presented papers in different session.As a part of Punnasseri Memmorial Talk Department conducted Marar-M.P.Sankunni Nair Anusmaranam on March14 2007. Dr,N.Ajayakumar,Dr.C.Rajendran and Dr.Chathanath Achuthanunni participated in the function.

Research Programmers and Extension Activities

Sri.P.Sukumaran ,Research Student of the Department awarded Ph.D on the topic Philosophy and Culture of the poetry of Akkitham.

Dr.P.Geetha , Dept. of Malayalam has published’ Sthree vadathinte Kerala parisaram’2005, by Maithri Books TVM,   ‘Pettunovum, Eettupunnya -vum’2005 by Mathrubhumi Books, Calicut,  and ‘Pranayam, Laingikatha, Adhikaram’ 2006, by Current Books, Thrissur  and ‘Aryamakilum Anarymakilum’ by Prabhath Books, TVM is under publication.  Is writing the History of Malayalam poetry 1900-1950 in the Reference Book.  Malayala Sahitya Charitham prepared by Kendra Sahitya Academy with Sri M.T.Vadudevan Nair as the Editor. Various studies, articles and interviews are being published in Mathrubhumi Weekly, Mathrubhumi  week end edition, Madyamam weekly and Grandhalokam.  Has attended national seminars conducted by the Dept. of English, Govt. College , Thrissur, at Prajyothi Nikethan College , Calicut , at Asan Smarakam, Madras and at Kaladi Sree Sankara Acharya Sanskrit University .  Member Board of studies, and women’s studies Dept. of the University of Calicut.She also got Muthukulam Parvathiamma Award this year.

Smt.C.P.Chithra is nominated as the member of Curriculum Steering Committe,SCERT.H.K.Santhosh presented a paper in Folklore and Media in the Folk Festival conducted by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy ,Thrissur on Feb.25,2007.He also publishe a research paper inBhashasahiti, theMalayalam Dept. Publication,University of Kerala.Sri.P.P.Praksanis Kerala.Sri.P.P.Praksan is working as the focus group member,SCERT Curriculum Committee.He is also functioming as the N.S.S.Proramme Officer and Secretery of the Staff Club.
