Department of Commerce and Management Studies is the biggest Department in the college having 13 members of Faculty,two Degree Courses viz,B.com and B.B.A and Post Graduate Course in M.com imparting education to 300 students which representsa staggering 30% of  total student strength of the institution. Department had its humble beginning in  1969 with Pre-Degree commerce course. B.com was started in 1970-71, M.com in 1978-79 while B.B.A is a recent edition in 1999-00.Department has two Ph.Dholders and two M.Phil holders.Two faculty members are persuing research leading toDoctorate one under FIP and the other on part-time basis.

Commerce faculty members are very active and deeply involved in all the spheres of activities of the college.Vice-Principal of the institution, associate N.C.C officer are commerce faculty members. This Department occupies a pivotal position in theinstitution due to the quality and quantity of its human resources.

Research Programmes

              Efforts are being initiated to get the Department recognized as an Approved Research Centre in Commerce and Management,Dr.C.K.Ravindranathan and Dr.R.Nelson have expressed their willingness to extend necessary guidance to the aspirants( research scholars). The proposal is being put up.

  

                          Final semester  of M.com stipulates preparation and presentation of project work by all the students under the guidance and supervision of a member of faculty.For the PG students this exercise is intended to familiarize themselves with the tools,techniques and methodology of conducting a minor research project including report presentation.All the faculty members are acting as project guides of M.com students. With effect from academic year 2006-07 project report preparation has become compulsory for Final B.B.A students also.

Academic Activities

  

  • Imparing quality education to students by committed faculty members.
  • Taking special classes and give remedial coaching to needy students.
  • Implementation of Tutorial System in all the classes by assigning a Tutor to each class as teacher in charge of that class.
  • Conducting periodical tests and runtime examinations for continuous evaluation of students
  • Keping a close watch on the attendance and progress of the students by taking hourly attendance and maintaining proper records.
  • Sustaining keen vigilance on the aspect of overall discipline of the students.
  • Conducting class PTA’s for setting a stage to interact with the parents for facilitating  mutual understanding.
  • Supervision and guidance of project work of M.com.& B.B.A students.
  • Providing guiding and counseling to students.Students are encouraged to share even their personal problems and worries so as to give them relax and make them comfortable.
  • Helping the students of M.com Final Semester and B.B.A Final Year students to locate  industrial units and get access for completion of project work.
  • Giving opportunity to the students to express themselves so as to equip them with the boldness and skill to interact with others by encouraging them to conduct seminars etc.
  • Department organized a National Seminar of two days in November 2005 highlighting “Recent Trends in Banking Sector” by inviting talented resource persons possessing in depth knowledge in  the relevant topic.

  

E.Research Programmes and Extension Activities

     GENERAL

  • Department has taken initiative to get it recognized as a research centre for persuing M.Phil and Ph.D.
  • The Entrepreneurial Development club functioning under the department has its objectives to generate, sustain and nourish entrepreneurial instructs in students. The club conducts periodical seminars to stimulate entrepreneurial instructs.
  • Department extend counseling and help including supply of intellectual input and directions to students appearing for various tests and interviews even to the vacant of conducting mode sessions.
  • Department also provides advise pertaining to tax matters on tax planning of other faculty members of the college.

1.      Shri.O.Venugopalan former H.O.D.of the department had been Associate NCC officer since 1988 and rose to the rank of Major.Now Principal of Government college, Kalpetta. M.Phil holder and persuing research leading to Doctorate.

2.      Shri.C.K.Ravindranathan:-Ph.D holder,Question Paper setter for Kerala University ,Subject expert of Kerala Public Service Commission.

3.      Smt.C.T.Lilly:-Elected Member of college council during 2002-03 and 03-04,Question paper setter of Kerala Public Service Commision.

4.      Shri.P.SarojKumar:-Member of Block Level Technical Advisory Committee of Pattambi  Block Member of Career Guidance Centre,had been executive member of college PTA.

5.      Shri.Punnoose Jacob:-President of Staff Club of the college,had been Vice-President of YMCA Pattambi for 3 years.

6.      Shri. V.K.Muralidharan:-NSS Programme officer during 2003-04,04-05,05-06&06-07,In charge of Tourism Club.Co-ordinator of Entrepreneuerial Development Club-Member of Multimedia Centre.

7.      Dr.R.Nelson:-Ph.D holder, at present the Associate NCC officer of the college  in the rank of Major.

8.      N.A.Jojomon:-Had been NSS Programme officer and attended N.I.C at Andhra Pradesh as Gentangent Commander,at present on FIP for persuing research leading  to Doctorate.

  

F.Awards,Scholarships,Endowments etc

  

         The  Alumni Association of the Department  is actively considering the institution of an Endowment  to give Scholarships to outstanding Commerce Students at Degree and PG Levels. 

  

G.Future Plans

  

1)      Utilising the facility of  Entrepreneurship Develepment Club which has close support with the Industrial Extention officer at the Block Panchayath,department visualizes the conduct of entrepreneurial awareness programmes and train potential entrepreneurs.

2)      Department has plans to set up a Management Consultation Cell to help neighbouring industrial undertakings by rendering advice pertaining to maintenance of Provident Fund Accounts,Book keeping& accounts,evolving recruitment policy of  employees etc.

3)      Another potential area where the development can play a  constructive role is in the field of  tax planning,Tax planning of  Individuals and Institutions can be done by the Department.

4)      Department has identified another ara to perform an important extension activity viz,coaching classes for CA aspirants.Similar coaching classes can be planned to equip students to get admission to MBA and to meet CS,ICWAI,ICFAI etc.

  

  

H.Facilities

  

1.      There are 8 class rooms functioning under the Department.

2.      Department itself is located in a very spacrous and well ventilated room attached with computer room having latest computer and sophisticated printer.

.4.      There is also an overhead projector which is utilized by faculty members as a teaching aid.
