of Chemistry
The Chemistry Department was started in 1967 when Science
groups were introduced for Pre-Degree course. B.Sc Degree was started in 1974 and
M.Sc in 1982.A student of the first degree batch,K.Chandramathy optained Calicut
University First Rank in Chemistry. Later K.H. Prema obtained first rank in B.Sc
Chemistry and M.Sc Chemistry. Many students have passed CSIR JRF/NET and are well
placed in various reputed institutions.

Study Tour
Study tour
is conducted for B.Sc. students during their final year. Generally we visit
Bangalore,Raman Institute,Bangalore, Sugar factory,Mandya,CFTRI Mysore Hindustan
Photo Films Ooty. Tour will be of five days duration and is by special convergence.
This is part of syllabus and students will get a chance to visit advanced research
laboratories and at the same time get enjoyment of a collective life during the
tour.
OUR VISION OF FUTURE
The department of chemistry had a humble beginning in 1967 with only a Pre-Degree
course. Over a period of years, the department has overcome several hurdles to stand
as a distinguished department in Kerala with regard to the graduate and post-graduate
education. Being an organization in the government sector, the growth of the department
was always affected by the scarcity of funds. However, the department was always
fortunate enough to have the most competent and qualified teachers appointed by
the Public Service Commission. The students were also admitted purely on merit.
Today, we are proud that out of the 11 faculty members (two of them on leave), 8
are Ph. D. holders in chemistry from reputed organizations such as IIT, RRL Trivandum,
CochinUniversity,
Calicut
University
, and
Kerala University
. Many of the faculty members are also University rank holders during their graduate
and post-graduate studies. Some of our faculty has been members of the Board of
PG and UG studies of the University. This, in combination with the good quality
students who enroll every year gives us the confidence to look into the future with
lot of hope. Many of our M.Sc. Students won ranks, qualified NET and are currently
part of the academia and industry around the world. Some are still pursuing the
doctoral degrees in reputed institutions such as IITs, RRL, etc. As we see it today,
with several of the faculty having excellent research background, we want to enrich
the post-graduate education with research in basic and applied chemistry. The department
should identify itself and get accredited as a
Research Center
and the faculty should engage in active research. Developing a positive infra-structure
is the need of the hour. With the government, in particular the Department of Science
& Technology, trying to assist departments like ours, we feel that nothing should
stop us from becoming a full-fledged Post-graduate and Research Center of the University.
We envision that with the generous support of the government agencies, we can make
this dream come true. We need to soon develop a Departmental Computer Facility with
internet access and should have regular computational Facilities available. The
faculty also would be using electronic media to aid teaching and in developing e-content
accessible to all the students. We also need to modernize the laboratory with proper
gas lines and hoods. In the next few years, the department should also procure several
sophisticated Instruments such as UV-VIS spectrometer, FTIR, Spectrofluorimeter,
and several other such systems. This, along with several talent faculty members
who are willing to spend any number of hours for academics, the department should
be able to become an excellent center for post-graduate education and a Research
Center in basic and applied chemistry, in the coming years.
