Brief History f the
Department
The Post Graduate Department of Botany,
Sree Neelakanta Government Sanskrit College,Pattambi was established in 1979. B.Sc degree course was started in 1979 and the status of a full fledged Post Graduate Department was attained in 1995. At present the Departmnet has eight teaching staff and two non-teaching staff. Sri M.R Ravindra Kumar is the Head of the Department. The Departmnet has B.Sc and M.Sc courses approved by the University of Calicut with a student strength of 25 and 12 respectively.

Academic activities
The Department conducted a two day national Seminar on “Contemporary Issues of Environment”
on 15th and 16th of
December 2005
Conduct study tours regularly for P.G and undergraduate students-to places of botanical
significance.
Conduct Annual Seminars on various topics in connection with Botany Association
inaugration.
Organise remedical classes, Seminars, debates etc as part of tutorial system.
Research and extension activities
Students actively participate in extension activities of NSS and CSS.

Organised an invited lecture on “orchids of Kerala” b y Dr. Mukthesh kumar, Scientist,
KFRI, Peechi on 10th January 2006.

Future Plans.
The Departmnet aims at developing a full fledged research wing Science threr are
many teachers with Research qualification who have the will and capacity to encourage
research, students can identify hoe
to do research wwork under them able guidence. The departmnet also wish to cultivate
cash crops of recent interset like vanilla, Sfed musli etc . So as to create awareness
of the awailabilty, cultivation pattern and marketing of these valuable crops to
the traditional farmers of this locality.

Study tour
The Departmnet use to conduct study tours every year for B.SC and M.Sc. Students
to different Ecological areas and research stations. This helps the students to
familirise with the flora and fauna and to study the biodiversity of different locations.
The students have to submit a tour report for their practical examination.

Scientist of Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Thrissur. After the inauguration
session , Dr. Mukhesh Kumar delivered a talk on “Orchids of Kerala”.
