ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR  2006-2007

   

Distinguished Guests, Teachers and My dear students,

   

           I have great pleasure to place before you a brief report of the activities of the college during the year 2006-07.  This college was founded by Panditharajan Punnasseri Sree Neelakanta Sarma in 1889 as “Saraswothodyothini Sanskrit School”.  In 1911 University of Madras upgraded and affiliated it as a Sanskrit College .  The college was taken over by Govt. of Kerala in 1958.  It has been recognized by the Govt. as a Centre of Excellence.  It is an approved centre of research in oriental languages.

   

Strength of the College:-  At present 1115 students are on the rolls of the college of which 755 are girl students.  40 research scholars are doing research under the guidance of six Research Guides.  There are 78 members on the Teaching Staff and 54 on the Non Teaching Staff. 

   

Examination Result:-  Our students have come out with flying colours in various University Examinations during this year also.

1.  MA Sanskrit --100% pass with 1st  2nd  and 3rd Ranks

4.  M. Com. -- 69% pass with 9 first classes

5.  M. Sc. Chemistry -- 83% pass with 9 first classes

.  U.G. Classes

1.  B.Sc. Chemistry -- 90% pass with 17 first classes

2.  B.Sc. Botany -- 95% pass with 16 first classes

3.  B.Sc. Zoology -- 100% pass with 19 first classes

4.  B.A. Economics -- 94% pass with 14 first classes

5.  B. Com. -- 70% pass with 32 first classes

6.  B.B.A. -- 72% pass with 19 first classes

7.  B.A. Malayalam -- 94% pass with 1st Rank and 18 first classes

8.  B.A. Sanskrit -- 72% pass with 2 first classes

9.  B.A. English\History -- 67% pass

   

College Union :-  Prof. P. Ravindrakumar of Botany  Department was appointed as Returning Officer for the College Union Election 2006-07.  He deserves appreciation for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the election. Dr. Santhosh, Department of Chemistry has been nominated as the Staff Advisor to the college union.   Since a separate report in the activities of the college union is being presented in this meeting, I am not intending to elaborate. 

   

Academic Activities of Associations

   

The Economics association was inaugurated by Smt. N. Sudha, Asst. Director of Agriculture, Pattambi and the Principal presided over the function. Dr.C.B. Baby and Dr. K.V Ramacahndran participated in the national seminar conducted by Mercy College , Palghat, Govt. College , kodenchery and PM Govt. College, Chalkudy.

   

Chemistry Day was inaugurated by Dr. K. Padmakumar, Lecturer, Govt: College Chittur on 04.01.07: Dr. M. Ravindran, H.O.D Chemistry presided over the function, Principal, Prof. T.R. Venugopalan and Kum. Ardra, felicitated. Dr Padmakumar presented a paper on ‘Bioinorganic Chemistry’.

   

The Botany Association for 2006-2007 was inaugurated on 10-01-07 Dr. K. Mukhesh Kumar eminent Scientist of Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi, Thrissur. After the inauguration session , Dr. Mukhesh Kumar delivered a talk on “Orchids of Kerala”. Since the Special paper for M.Sc is “Environmental Biology” the research activities of the Department were mainly focused on various aspects of environmental biology like “Biodiversity analysis of Campus flora”, Environmental biochemistry of riverine vegetation of Pattambi.

   

The formal inauguration of  Zoology Association was  held on 9-1-07. Dr. Venugopal delivered the inaugural address on Communicable diseases and the means of control

   

The Sanskrit Department organized the Punnasseri Memorial talk on 08-02-2007. Prof. K.G. Sanakrapillai , the chief guest, delivered a talk on Kavithayum Puthukalavum. The Sanskrit day  was celebrated on 01-02-07.

Malayalam

Kum.S.V.Ardra of III B.A.Malayalam (2006) got First Rank in the University Examinations. All the students of M.A.Malayalam Fourth Semester(2007)passed with First class in their M.A.Examination.In connection with the Punnasseri Memorial Lecture series the Department conducted Marar and M.P.Sankunni Nair Anusmaranam on 14-2-2007 at Seminar Hall. Eminent Scholars like Dr.N.Ajayakumar, Dr.Chathanath Achuthanunni and Dr.C.Rajendran participated in the function. Dr.P.Geetha of Department of Malayalam got Muthukulam Parvathi Amma Award this year

   

English –History Association Day was celebrated on January 12th , 2007 Dr. N.P Vijayakumaran presented a paper on “Vllauvandan Culture”.A two day seminar on Cognitive Constructivist Perspective on Teaching of English” was conducted on 30th and 31st January 2007. Eminent scholars and professors of English like Dr. P. Madhavan(CIEFL, Hydrabad), Dr. Anadan(SCERT, Kerala Govt.), Dr. C.P. Sivadasan(R.I.E, Banglore) presented papers in the seminar.The Seminar was inaugurated BY Noted Indo-Anglian writer Inaugurated by Mrs. Anita Nair

Computer Centre

Computer Centre has 11 computers purchased using MPLAD fund of Honourable M.P. Sri S. Ajayakumar. Centre has another ten computers purchased for INFLIBNET program

Using these computers centre is conducting a computer awareness class (Microsoft Office Package) for I year B.A, B.Sc students. Two guest lectures engage these classes from 8 to 9.30 am and from 3.30 to 5 P.M. The Centre also offers internet browsing facility with a nominal charge of RS 5/=per hours for students and RS 10/= per hours for the staff.

Computer Centre is used by students for preparing their dissertation.

   

Multi Media Centre

A Multi Media Centre is established in this College during this year to develop a multimedia-learning environment in the college, first of its kind in Kerala. The goals of multimedia centre are

1. Promote multimedia based learning and teaching

2. Provide multimedia facilities for all curricular and co curricular activities

3. Develop multimedia educational tools and produce creative works.

The centre is now having a full-equipped Multimedia classroom and a documentation wing. The centre is coordinating various levels of activities like computer course for all Degree students, Internet Club, Interdisciplinary Forum, College website development, Language lab and Film Club. Multi media Centre is now going to conduct a multimedia basic level course every year. The course is structured in the form of an orientation programme through which the students will get basic knowledge, skills and techniques in multi media.

Our college has a website http://sngscollege.org and it is now renewed as a good academic website. Apart from the administrative and infrastructural matters, certain space is provided for academic and literal matters. Site contains the history of the college, Life and works of Guru Nathan, Old issues of Vijnanachinthamani, electronic format of old Sanskrit works, Vijnanachinthamanai is now published as an E-Journal with in the website in which research papers and creative writings of the Teachers, Scholars and Students are included. Multimedia Centre is now doing a project of Digital Archiving of the multimedia collections for Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy . Interdisciplinary Forum has already conducted Four Lectures in various topics. Three films were screened under the auspices of Film Club.

   

Music Club

The college has a Music Club dedicated create and promote a taste of classical Music among the students. It is meeting every month and conducting programmmes bases on different Ragas. The programme it staged in the Bharat Nirman Exhibition cum Seminar in October 2006 was highly appreciated

   

 Research Activities

General Library:-  Our library has a very good collection of more than 50,000 books and a collection of very rare Palm leaf manuscripts and journals.  The library has started functioning in the New Building , which was constructed with assistance from MPLADS Scheme of Sri. S. Ajayakumar, Hon’ ble M.P. of Ottapalam.  since  June 2003. 

Parent Teachers Association:-  The parent teachers association in the college is very active.  PTA plays a very important role in maintaining  peace in the campus.  It provides financial assistance to various departments for organizing  seminars.  Half yearly examinations are conducted in the college with the assistance of PTA.  Furniture repair is a major head of expenditure of PTA.  Founder’s day of the college is celebrated by PTA, and Punnassery Memorial Lectures are also arranged along with it.  This year noted poet K.G.Sankara Pillai delivered the “Punnassery Memorial Lecture”  .

College Development Committee:-  The College Development Committee was established in 1987.  This year CDC has taken up the work of Multimedia Centre and the renovation of the computer centre and the Seminar Hall

   

National Service Scheme:-  There are two Units of NSS functioning in the college.  Sri. Dr,P.Haridasan, Department of Zoology and Sri. V.K. Muraleedharan, Department of Commerce are the Programme Officers This year’s annual special camp was held at Peringode High School from 23-12-06 to 1-1-07. Apart from renovation of three roads , the NSS conducted a socio- economic and health survey and a free medical camp sponsored by the Aurobindo Hospital

   

National Cadet Corps:-  Major A. Nelson. Department of Commerce is in charge of the NCC Unit of the College.  A lot of cadets had got exposure outside Kerala Camp Experience besides camp training in Kerala.    This year also three cadets got selection as Soldier Entry in Military and one in the Officer rank.  42 Cadets attended certificate “B” examination and 16 cadets attended certificate “C” examination.There are 160 cadets in the NCC out of which 45 are SW girls.

Sports and Games:-  The college Annaual Athletic Meet was conducted on 19thn and 20th December 2006.The College football, Athletics, Cricket and Gymnasium tams have participated in vartous inter collegiate competitions
