Distinguished guests and my students,
I have great pleasure to place before you a brief report of the activities of our college during the year 2007-2008.Our college was founded by the renowned scholar and social reformer, Panditharajan Punnasseri Nambi Sree Neelalanta Sarma in 1889 as Saraswathodyothini Sanskrit School. In 1911 University of Madras upgraded and affiliated it as a Sanskrit college. The college was taken over by the Govt.of Kerala in 1958. Now the college is affiliated to the University of Calicut. It has been declared as the centre of Excellence, by the Govt. of Kerala. NAAC established under UGC has accredited our college, during 2005, at B++ level. It has an approved centre of Research in Oriental languages.
Strength of the college
At present 1169 students are in the roll of the college, of which 70% are girl students.40 Research students are doing research in the Research departments. There are 74 members on the teaching staff and 38 on the non-teaching staff.

Our students had remarkable performance in the University examinations during the year also.

College Union
Dr.K.V.Ramachandran, Dept. of Economics was appointed as returning officer for the college Union Eletion for the Year 2007-08. He deserves appreciation for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the election. Sri.P.P.Prakasan(Dept.of Malayalam) has been nominated as the staff adviser to the college Union. Since a separate report of the college Union is being presented in this meeting. I am not intended to elaborate.
National Service Scheme
There are 2 units of N.S.S functioning in the college.Dr.P.Haridasan(Dept of Zoology) and Sri.P.P.Prakasan(Dept of Malayalam) are the programme officers. NSS units of the college conducted a 10 days special camp at Sanskarika Nilayam, Pilakkattiri of Nagalasseri Grama Panchayath, from 21st December to 30 th December 2007.Our NSS volunteers constructed an approach road to Plakkattiri to thiramangalam.Another road was constructed to the colony near Samskarika Nilayam. NSS conducted Onam celebrations. A programme was conducted against plastic on 4-10-07.An orientation course was conducted for I st year Degree students on 29-09-07. A legal awareness class was also conducted. NSS volunteers actively participated in the Pattambi constituency Arogyamela on 16 th and 17 th February 2008.NSS volunteers participated in a programme on “Commonalities of Religious rituals and Spirituals” held from 26-01 2008 to 30-01-2008 at Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University , Kaladi. NSS took up the work related to the extensive data bank about the state of Higher Education in Kerala.
National Cadets Corps(NCC)
Maj.(Dr)A.Nelson is the NCC officer of the college. There is one company of 160 cadets (115 boys and 45 girls). During 2007-08 our NCC units hosted a number of activities. During Onam holydays combined all wing camp was conducted in our college and about 700 cadets from various units participated including 35 cadets from our college.40 cadets from our college participated in the two days Trekking Expedition to Silent Valley.15 cadets participated in the combined annual training camps, Army attachment camp and Trekking conducted in the various states in India.Sgt.Sangeet of II nd BCom and Sgt.Mohammed Sheref of II nd BA Sanskrt participated in Republic day camp at New Delhi during 2008.Sgt.Sangeeth was the only cadet from Kerala contigent who could participate in the prime Ministers guard of honour. I congratulate the above cadets on behalf of the college. 85 cadets appeared for the certificate B examination and 17 cadets for certificate C examination.
Compulsory Social Service
Sri.V.P.Vijayan, Dept. of Sanskrit is in Charge of the Compulsory Social Service programme of the college. CSS is intended to make an awareness among students about the dignity of labour and importance of social service.
Research Activities
Our college has been recognized by the University of Calicut as a Research centre for Oriental languages.
General Library
Our library has a very good collection of more than 50,000 books and a very rare palm leaf manuscripts and journals. Library conducted book week celebration.New reading room for general library is under construction.
Parent Teacher’s Association
The PTA of the college is very active. PTA plays a very important role in maintaining peace in the campus. It provides financial assistance to various departments in organizing seminars. Half yearly examination was conducted in the college with the assistance of PTA. Founder’s day of the college was celebrated and Punnasseri Memorial Lecturers are also arranged along with it. PTA is running a computer awareness course for Degree students.
College Development Committee
The CDC was established in 1987. CDC has provided the assistance for the construction of Canteen-Cum-Post office building in the college. CDC has taken up several renovation activities in the college.
Departmental activities
UGC has sanctioned rupees 1,82,000 under 10 plan for the construction of a Canteen-Cum-Post office building . Honourable MLA of Pattambi Sri.C.P.Mohammed has allotted 5 lakh from his development fund . Rs.2.88 lakhs has been sanctioned by the CDC. The building is likely to be completed before the next academic year. Sri.Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, MP of Rajya sabha has allotted Rs 10 lakh for the construction of the reading room of the library. The work is entrusted with the Nirmithi Kendra, Palakkad. PWD has under taken several repair and renovation works in the college including strengthening of the roof.
Extra curricular activities
Sports Day was celebrated on 16-01-2008 and 17-01-2008.
A nature club is functioning in the college with Sri.M.P.Raveendra kumar (Vice Principal) as the convener.
Department of Sanskrit organized three days seminar on “Environmental visions in Sanskrit literature” from 07-02-20008 to 09-02-2008. Sri.K.C. Narayanan, inaugurated the seminar, Dr. C. P. Radhakrishnan, Dr. SAS Sharma, Dr. K. H. Subramanian, Dr. P.V. Raman Kutty, Dr. C. M. Neelakantan, Dr. Ajith Kumar. K. V. Dr. V.K.Vijayan, Dr.T. Mini etc presented papers during various sessions. Miss Priyakumari and Miss Paseetha of MSc Chemistry 2nd semester, got third prize in All Kerala inter collegiate chemistry Quiz competition, organized by Cochin University of Science and Technology. I congratulate them for their achievement.
Career Guidance Placement Cell
Career guidance and placement cell of the college organized various campus recruitment drives during 2007-08. 131 candidates got placement in different firms during the reporting year. Sri. P.Noufal (Dept of Economics) was in charge of the placement cell till date. Here after Dr. P.K.Sreekumar will be the liaison officer of the placement cell.
Multimedia centre
Multimedia centre is an academic plat form that brings the resources and teachers of all the departments together and Strive to integrate learning with the latest technological innovations. A good number of activities have been carried out by the centre. The centre also runs the electronic journal Vijanachinthamani, updates the college web site and renders every possible assistance to the over all betterment of the college. It has successfully completed two projects of Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and one for Govt. college Kalpetta is on track, Multi media centre organized the following programmes;
- Three day orientation course for B.Ed Entrance test.
- Frames film circle conceived and directed a documentary namely Kurosova-Reel & Real.
- An hour long speech was offered by Mr. Kiran Maske on 24-09-2007.
- A documentary dealing environmental issues was screened under the joined auspicious of Multimedia centre and Nature club.
These are a few among several activities organized by the Multimedia centre. Mr. H. K.Santhosh (Dept of Malayalam) and Dr. P.J. Sreekumar (Dept of English) deserves appreciation for their efforts in organizing the activities of Multimedia centre.
The college is the glittering monument of a noble tradition of propagating knowledge with out barrier of cast, creed, and religion, established by Gurunathan. We are celebrating 150th birth anniversary of Punnassery Nambi. On this occasion we dedicate ourselves for the noble causes established by the founder of the college.
On the occasion of celebrating the college day I wish every one of you a very bright future and successful career.
